Tricot Trial Checklist

The following table can be used as a checklist while planning a tricot experiment.

StepTaskKey ActionsResponsible
1.PreparationDefine scopeIdentify local problems; select technology options; determine evaluation criteria; decide target area & farmer numbersResearchers + Implementers
Prepare materialsProduce quality seed/inputs; prepare observation cards, brochures, and training materialsResearchers
2.DesignCreate project in ClimMobRegister account; set up project using SOP; assign field agents; input technology options; revise data collection questionsImplementers
Randomization & packagesGenerate trial packages with QR codes; label bags; prepare balanced setsImplementers
3.RecruitmentFarmer selectionIdentify volunteers (men/women, different ages & roles); ensure commitmentField agents
MobilizationOutreach via meetings, posters, word of mouthField agents
4.DistributionTraining workshopTrain farmers in tricot method, trial setup, and observation cardsImplementers + Field agents
Distribute trial packagesProvide QR-coded packages with 3 options, observation card, and brochureField agents
Register farmersUse ODK Collect to record farmer details and package codeField agents
5.ExecutionOn-farm trialsFarmers plant/manage 3 plots side by side under normal practicesFarmers
6.ObservationField evaluationsFarmers record “best” and “worst” for each criterion on observation cardsFarmers
Follow-upProvide reminders/support via calls/visits; assist with card filling if neededField agents
7.CompilationCollect dataField agents gather observation cards/data; input via ODK Collect; upload to ClimMobField agents
8.AnalysisProcess dataUse ClimMob to generate reports (technology rankings, explanatory variable analysis)Implementers
OutputsProduce analysis report (researchers) + infosheets (farmers)Implementers
9.FeedbackFinal workshopsShare overall results; distribute infosheets; facilitate farmer group discussionsImplementers + Field agents
Practical trainingProvide additional agronomy lessons (e.g., seed storage)Implementers
10.EvaluationAssess cycleGather farmer + agent feedback; evaluate indicators (completion rate, gender ratio, adoption, repeat participation, diffusion)Researchers + Implementers
Plan next cycleAdjust technology pool (drop poor options, add new); expand farmer participationAll stakeholders
